"You get what you pay for..." is one of those classic lines my father used to deliver with great aplomb...other's included:
"The only time you get any sense of this world is when it's time to leave it..." (That's on his grave)
"Gambling is senseless - you bet on one horse in the race, the bookmaker has the other 14!!"
"Electric windows on a car? More to go wrong...they will go faulty when they are down - and a sunroof? A big piece of glass cut into the roof? It's bound to leak..." (He was right on both counts, actually)
"TURN IT DOWN!"
And so on...
But shopping recently made me question his words of wisdom...
Look at the prices of the stuff in the photo's...they're in RMB - simply divide by 10 to get back to UK pounds (mercifully convenient for us Brits here!) - so 100RMB = 10 quid. So...that means a small box of Special K is nearly 9 quid...and a nice bottle of one of my fave New Zealand Sauvignon's (Marlborough region, of course!) is best part of 24 quid. About 8 at Tesco.
Butter is the same - but it's just GOT to be Lurpak (or Anchor at a push) for me.
Sat here in my hotel - and STARVING (see above entry) I'd willingly pay a kings ransom for a bag of crisps...a Snickers...ANYTHING...I am SO HUNGRY!!!!
